sewing organization tip

One thing about sewing that can get out of control super fast is organization. When I first started sewing, we had a tiny apartment and my sewing space was our kitchen table and a shelf in our hall closet. I had stacks for my projects and it got crazy out of control. Now I have a sewing room and my project organization gets crazy out of control. :)

A few weeks ago I was strolling through the dollar bins at Target, I heart Target, and I found some super cute cardboard paper trays. I had an idea. They were the perfect size to store fabric in the project process. (Think quilt blocks, cut fabric, dress fabric for a little girl, etc.) Plus they were a dollar. Score. So I picked up a couple and put them to use.

Here they are holding all my Swoon blocks. Slide the pattern on top and you have all your pieces for the project in one place.

Plus, if you are like me and have a little helper who loves to play with whatever mommy is playing with, it is easy to stick the tray up on a shelf and it looks neat and tidy.

I found this cute aqua one around Christmas and it holds my bobbins, pins, and little scissors. I put it next to my machine when I sew and when I am done, it goes up high on a shelf. Again, out of the reach of little investigative clutches.

So go and grab some from the happiest place on Earth {for me at least} and get those projects organized!

i'm swooning along

A few weeks ago I read about the Swoon Along over at I'm a Ginger Monkey. Like many, I've been in love with Swoon from Thimble Blossoms. I decided to join in on the fun and am so glad I did. I only made one block, they measure 24.5" square, and it will be a wall hanging in my baby's room. Since it was such a fun block, I am planning to the full quilt in the future. Last week I did all the cutting and I've spent the last two eveningish piecing the block...

I didn't use fat quarters, the pattern calls for two per block, I used scraps of Kona Cotton in Baby Pink and my last bit of Sandi Henderson's Farmer's Market. (So sad all my Farmer's Market is officially gone.) I'm planning to add a 4" white border and binding with a green from Ruby.

This quilt included some firsts for me. Meaning, I've never done a quilt that required this much precision. (It is not perfect by any means, some seams are a little off.) You don't have to be perfect at piecing to attempt this quilt, but adding extra pins and getting your 1/4" seam allowance just right makes it much easier. It truly was like putting together a giant fabric jigsaw puzzle. It was also the first time I did a Flying Geese block! My first one was super wonky but after that one they turned out just fine.

So if you've been thinking about joining in on the Swoon fun...do it! One block isn't a huge commitment and it is a fun challenge. I loved it!

Happy New Year....17 days later :)

Wow. Usually January slugs by after the holidays. That is not the case this year. It has flown by just as fast as the holiday season. I know this will sound way belated and 'that was so a month ago', but I hope your Christmas and New Years was truly wonderful and that you were able to spend it with those you love.

With that, I haven't shared some of the Christmas presents I made this year. Granted I forgot to take a couple pictures but I can at least link to the tutorial/inspiration:

1. Grocery Sack Holders - Made a couple of these and the recipients loved them! If you are ever looking for a great gift these things are snap to make and you often can use fabric from your stash or larger scraps.

2. Name Ornaments - One of the gifts I made for my mom was a set of ornaments with the grandkid's names on them. (I cut out the names with vinyl using my Cricut.) She loved them and I will simply make her a new ornament when a new grandbaby arrives.

3. Aprons - I made an apron for one of our little cousins and I heard that she absolutely loved it. Yay! I used the 'Mommy and Mia' pattern from Sew Much Ado.

I made another apron for my little miss. She loves to cook/bake with me so I decided she needed an apron since cooking with a two year old is never neat and tidy. My original plan was to make another Mommy and Mia apron, but then I found this apron tutorial from Sew Liberated. It is great because the the apron can easily be taken on and off by a young child. I used the flower pot template from the pattern to make a pocket but added my own flowers. (Please excuse the photos, my model was not cooperating.)

4. Stocking - This was not a gift but a need for our baby's first Christmas. When I started this project on the afternoon of December 23rd I had no creative juices left. So I did my first 'knockoff' project! I used the Pottery Barn Kid's Woodland Angel Stocking as my inspiration:

My idea was to do a sugar plum fairy because my older daughter's stocking is an angel. So with a couple of changes I made mine look more Sugar Plum Fairy-ish and less angel-ish. Success? I have all the template pieces I drew and am thinking about posting a tutorial this year as it gets closer to Christmas.

So there you go, my handmade Christmas recap! Currently, I am in the thick of some big projects: another quilt, floor length drapes for my family room, and lots of pillows for my couches. (In addition to coming up with some new ideas for the shop and blog!) Hope you all are doing great!!!

the wall

I've been asked about the wall behind the blocks. Is it vinyl? Stencil? Neither. It is Allen + Roth wallpaper from Lowe's! The best part is that it only costs $20.00 a roll. Yep. The color says beige/tan on the package and the photo on Lowe's.com makes it look more tan than it is in reality. It isn't 100% gray but I say it is much more gray than tan. This wall gets a lot of natural light so it really makes the pattern pop. The wallpaper looks amazing when it is up and is a great way to add interest. Get prepared for many complements if you install this wallpaper.

Christmas Projects

Hi there! I am still here! :) Is it just me or did Christmas totally sneak up on you this year? I mean you'd think I'd be on top of it, Christmas happens every year at the same time, but this year...it truly got here fast. I have 5 days left and lots of things still to do...so this will be really quick.

Here are two projects that I've accomplished! Yay! I've accomplished a few more but I have to wait till after Christmas to share...

Believe Banner - It was quite the project but I love it! The base is chipboard which makes it very sturdy and will last for years. No, I did not come up with this idea on my own, I made it at my mom's ward Super Saturday.

Merry Christmas blocks - I actually made these last year! I made the images in Photoshop with various digital papers and printed the images out at Costco. Then I cut 3.5" square blocks, painted the blocks black, distressed, and modge podged the pictures the blocks. Pretty easy! If anyone is interested, I have a few different styles. (We made them while family was in town last Christmas so I created different styles for people to choose from.) I'd be happy to share the files with you. (Probably not till after Christmas though...unless you promised to come over and help me sew my few last projects!)

Well. I have lots to do but just wanted to drop in and share these with you!

I probably won't post again till after the New Year so I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Life is getting back to normal after our new addition so I hope to be posting somewhat regularly after the New Year. Until then take care and thanks for hanging in there with me and still reading this silly little blog!

Happy Thanksgiving

Hi everyone! Just popping into wish all my American readers a happy and wonderful Thanksgiving. I hope you all are with those you love and have a chance to reflect on your many blessings. I am grateful for so many things but my most cherished blessing is my family. I love them all so very much.

Over the next few days I am looking forward to time with family while enjoying some wonderful food and having loads of fun. (There is a yummy Pumpkin Cheesecake in the oven as I type.) I am sure we all are looking forward to all the deliciousness that will be served up over the next couple of days...the effects of the food though...not so much. :)

Good Monday Morning to you all!

I am still here! I am just spending lots of time with our sweet new arrival. Spending lots of time holding my little newborn as that newborn stage flies by all too quick. I hope to hop on and say hi over the Christmas season with {maybe} a project or two...but if you don't hear from me I am busy with my little girls.

Project Marathon 2011

The last few weeks have been busy. I jokingly say I've been exiled to my sewing room, which isn't a negative, to finish the l-o-n-g list of projects that I have to get done.

So do you want to see some of the projects?

I mention this one first because if I had a book entitled 'The Collective Sewing Works of LeAnne' this would be on the cover....but with better pictures. (Mainly because this was a lot of work and it turned out to be more of Rapunzel's ball gown than her little everyday dress she wears in the movie.)

My little miss is going to be Rapunzel for Halloween. I broke down and bought the Simplicity pattern, I do not usually like big box patterns, but I can honestly say it was the best $0.99 I've EVER spent. (Not that it's an exceptionally amazing pattern or something, but because of the brain cells I saved by not figuring out this dress on my own.)

My Wild Thing quilt top! Can I say how much I love love love this quilt?! It was so much fun to make. Lately, I haven't done borders and I decided to stop after one because I wasn't sure if I wanted the second. Any suggestions? Add the second border or leave as is? The second border would be from this fabric.

Stockings for a customer who bought some stockings a couple of years back and wanted to finish out her set. Totally got me in the Christmas spirit...which leads me to say I totally listened to Christmas music while making them.

Pajama pants. I used the Kid Pant tutorial over at Made and whipped out, in record time, two pairs of pants. It is a great pattern/tutorial and I be using it for Christmas jammies. I will probably enlarge the pattern ever so slightly to allow for some 'comfy' room since they're jammies.

A little itty bitty baby dress and booties. (Leggings are Carter's.) I made a sweet little dress for my girl #2 who will be debuting in about 9 days. Yes, I am pregnant...or should I say almost DONE being pregnant. :) (Don't look too closely at the inside of the booties, they are a mess!) I love the little baby houndstooth print in red and pink! Precious!

A project that involves gray houndstooth fabric! Like just about everyone, I love houndstooth. I loved this project because it was quick, easy, and I got to use my new serger! I actually got it back in August for my big 3-0 b-day.

The finished project above is crib bedding. I have been agonizing over finding the right fabric for this project. I wanted to keep it neutral for a boy or girl but I did not want to use traditional neutral colors or ANY tan. (Nothing against tan.) I decided on gray because I could do gray with blue, yellow, or even green if I have a boy in the future and still do pink now. I made a crib sheet, it cost less than buying one, so I won't mind switching it out for a boy. (Plus we all know crib sheets get pretty worn from just one baby.) Best part about making this crib sheet - I made it from start to finish in under an hour. I haven't finished the quilt or mobile I have planned but those can come later.

Tutorial: Cutting Fabric with the Cricut

Ready for a break from the 'shop' posts? Me too. I love sharing crafting tutorials with you all and am sorry I haven't done too many as of late. I hope to be better at sharing tutorials and some of the other projects I've been working on.

Yes. You can cut fabric with your Cricut. No. It won't make your machine blow up. But yes, there are some tricks that make it a little easier. So after cutting many a lettering kits I thought I'd share how I cut fabric with the Cricut.

I've owned my Cricut for almost three years and I love it. I purchased it on Black Friday from Walmart.com. About 95% of what I cut with my Cricut is fabric. The Cricut cuts fabric wonderfully and I thought I'd share my technique if anyone out there is attempting this. (I am sure the method is very similar for the Silhouette. Just make sure you use the appropriate fusible webbing that Silhouette recommends.)

Materials

Heat n' Bond Ultrahold (red package) I am not affiliated with Heat n' Bond, or Cricut for that matter, neither know I exist. Heat n' Bond is the brand that has given me the best results. You do not need to sew to reinforce this type of webbing. Do not use the Heat n' Bond Lite. (purple package) I haven't had good luck with the Lite when cutting with the Cricut. However, it is still a great product if you need a sewable or light-weight fusible webbing for quilt appliqueing or just appliqueing in general.

You can buy Heat n Bond in 1 yard packs or 5 yard packs. I usually buy my Heat n' Bond at JoAnn's when the notions are 50% off or BOGO. That way it is only about $5.00 each instead of $10.00 each for a 5 yard roll. I use a lot of this stuff. Yes, I have contemplated buying it in this size. (I've seen it at Walmart too.)

Fabric - the amount you need depends on your project. For this project I used 1/2 yard cuts of fabric.

I haven't had the best results when I use CHEAP CHEAP fabric, think the FQs at JoAnn's. I've had great results with the stripes, polka dots, and vine fabrics from JoAnn's Keepsake Calicos. (see the title picture above for examples) I also have cut designer fabric and it works like a dream.

A new blade or one that has NOT been used to cut paper. This is for the same reason you don't use paper scissors to cut fabric or your fabric scissors to cut paper...{shudder}. I mark the blades I use for fabric with a Sharpie marker. I do not have the Deep Blade Housing for my Cricut. I just use the regular blade housing that came with my Cricut. However, I've only cut cotton and quilt weight fabrics. If you are cutting thicker fabric than you probably want to get the Deep Blade Housing.

Iron - I bought a cheap iron from Walmart that I only use for my projects that use fusible webbing/interfacing. This is totally optional, but I ruined the nice iron we got as a wedding gift from such projects, so I just paid $7 bucks for a cheapo one and use it for my sticky projects.

Directions

Prewashing Fabric
When cutting fabric with my Cricut, I only prewash my fabric if I am going to wash the finished product. I do not prewash the fabrics I use for the letters for my lettering kits. If you prewash your fabric, do not dry it with fabric softener. After washing, iron with heavy starch. You want your fabric to be as crisp and smooth as possible. The starch helps bring back some of that sheen and smoothness you get with not washed fabric. You do not need to make the fabric super stiff, so just use a normal amount of startch.

1. Press your fabric well, very well. You do not want wrinkles or creases at all. Use water or steam to get any and all wrinkles and creases out.

2. Cut the Heat n' Bond to your desired size. I made 'sheets' of fabric for this project so I cut my Heat n' Bond into 12"x17" sheets. The length is 17" because that is the width of the Heat n ' Bond. I have the 12" x 24" mats so I could make my sheets larger than 12"x12".

3. Adhere to the wrong side of your fabric following the package directions. You want your fabric to be slightly bigger than your piece of webbing. (I just adhered it to the whole 1/2 yard piece of fabric...you just can't see it all.)

4. Flip over the fabric to the right side and press well. The webbing has to be fully-adhered to the fabric or you will not get a good cut. I just like giving it a good going over.

I made two sheets of each color, here is the view from the back of the fabric:

5. Cut your fabric down to the size of the webbing. I used my rotary cutter and acrylic ruler to make it nice and straight. (I like doing it this way because the webbing doesn't ooze out onto your iron or ironing board.)

Finished sheets after trimming.

6. Again, I like making sure the webbing is fully adhered, especially around the edges. So I just quickly go around the edges with the iron after I've trimmed down my sheets.

7. Now you are ready to cut! I like to prepare all my fabric at once if I am doing a big project, like the lettering kits. So if it has been a few days since adhering the webbing, I will quickly give the sheet a quick iron before placing it on the mat. Totally optional, but it just makes me feel better. :) Place the sheet on the mat and smooth well with your hands. Cut as desired! I set my pressure to high, blade depth to 5, and speed to slow. You may want to practice on a scrap of fabric with webbing just to see what works best with your fabric and machine.

8. If you are cutting small and intricate shapes/letters there may be a few places where a thread of fabric is holding shape/letter onto the sheet of fabric. Most of the time I can just give the shape/letter a tug and it comes right off the sheet of fabric. Sometimes though, I have to get out my little applique scissors and trim a thread or two. I only have this happen with SMALL letters/shapes. I've NEVER had this happen with larger shapes. Larger shapes separate from the sheet of fabric just like when you are cutting paper.

9. Adhere your letters/shapes to your project following the package directions. If I am adhering to felt, I always use a pressing cloth between the project and my iron. This is because you use a higher temp on your iron to adhere the letter then you would want to use with felt. And yes, felt can and DOES melt...I know from experience. You do not need to sew to reinforce this type of fusible webbing. (That is from the manufacturer, not me.) I've heard you can gum up your needle if you do, my mother's experience. I did try it on my machine and it sewed fine but it isn't something I do regularly. Therefore, I am not going to give you the go to try it on your nice sewing machine. Try at your own RISK.

Hope this helps anyone out there attempting to cut fabric with your Cricut. It really opens up so many possibilities for fabric!

What IS included:

* binder ring to bind the book

What IS NOT included:
* hard copy directions to make the book
However, I will have an updated post with a few more details in the next little bit...like tonight or tomorrow.

The back cover is a little different, I used scraps of fabrics instead of more ric rac.

(So many of these fabrics bring back happy sewing memories...Puncuation, fabric from my daughter's Easter Dress, some Bliss, .... sorry tangent.)

Most kits will contain the exact fabrics and trims pictured. (I added some lace this time...fun!) There may be a few variances here and there, but for the most part what you see is what you get. I did throw in some extra ribbons and trims for some colors but I didn't include them all in my sample.

So there you go! Hope you all like the 'updated' version. It really is a quick project. I put my sample together in an evening. (That is of course using a kit, you may need two evenings if you are cutting out your own fabrics and trims.)

If you were wondering, still have plenty of just the lettering kits. These would make a precious Christmas present! I still have a few kits left in Spanish, but they are made from the previous font.

The Day Has Arrived...

...when lettering kits for the 'my Colors' Quiet Book are back in stock! Yay! Thank you for your patience as I know these took me MUCH longer than I originally anticipated. (The kits didn't take this long to to cut and assemble. My summer just was much busier than anticipated and this project just kept on getting pushed to the back burner. Sorry!) Where Did the First Two Weeks of August Go?

Anyone have a clue? (I don't have the excuse of having school-age kids headed back to school...so I am really in trouble!)

Well. At least I can say I've been busy. I am busy making lots and lots of kits. Lettering Kits, my Colors Quiet Book FULL kits, Halloween Kits, and a new pattern. Want a sneak peek of the pattern?

Favorite Tutorials: Free Motion Quilting

A few posts back I showed you my recently finished Layer Cake quilt. This quilt was different from others I've made because it was my first attempt at Free Motion Quilting. (FMQ) I am NOT an expert, nor never plan to be, but I thought I'd pass along some of the tutorials I used and a few tips I learned along the way.

There are a gazillon tutorials out there on how to FMQ which is great because if one doesn't speak 'your language' - does that ever happen to you with a tutorial? - you can just try another one. I looked at dozens of tutorials and the ones I will mention here were my favorites.

My ~~two~~ three cents:

Cent #1: PRACTICE. Not once, or twice, but several or a dozen times before you try it on your beautiful quilt. I made and practiced on at least a dozen mini quilt sandwiches before I attempted my quilt. Just take pieces of batting and sandwich between two pieces of fabric, 12x12 is a great practice size. Once you have a handle on the practice squares, dive into that quilt!

Cent #2: Thread matters. I tried different types of thread when I practiced on my mini-quilt sandwiches. My favorite 'look' was achieved by using Gutterman's 100% cotton machine quilting thread. You can find this at any JoAnn's and with a coupon it isn't too pricey. Oh, Frannson's Freemotion Quilting tutorial, see below, gives great suggestions for thread.

Cent #3: In my opinion, you really don't get the feel of the whole process until you are doing your quilt. The feel is just completely different with a quilt compared to the little quilt sandwiches. So don't be surprised if it takes a little time, even with all your practicing, to get the feel down of doing a quilt. My first attempt at FMQ was not perfect, but no one will notice. :)

Making a Quilt Sandwich by Oh, Frannson!

Basting by Lella Boutique
After she adds the borders to her quilt, she shows you how to baste your quilt sandwich with basting spray. (Have never tried this technique, but I will on my next quilt.)

Finish a Quilt by Cluck, Cluck Sew
Gives clarity to that vague statement of baste, quilt, and bind that we all read on quilt patterns. Gives it all to you from start to finish. Her tutorial is in a Google Doc located in her right-hand side bar under the heading 'My Buttons and Links.' Just look for the below picture.

Freemotion Qutiling by Oh, Franson!
Again, very detailed and great information. She has great info on thread selection.

Freehand Machine Quilting by Lella Boutique - After reading several tutorials about how to FMQ, it was great to actually see the process 'in motion'. I found it helpful to see how to guide the quilt as you FMQ.

Well, if you follow Sandi's blog, you've read that she is reprinting select colors and releasing them as a collection this fall. Wahoo. Here is the great part. She is allowing people to vote for their favorite colors and the results will be considered when she chooses which colors to reprint. You can vote for more than one color, and let me tell you I am having a hard time not wanting to pick ALL of the colors. Destash and Inventory Sale

If you haven't noticed, my shop has been totally on the back burner lately. A little thing called life has been in the numero uno position. However, I am gearing up for new items - including a new pattern - so I am clearing out old inventory and some personal supplies.

All inventory sale items should be listed by tomorrow and destash items will be listed over the next few weeks. (Hopefully sooner if Etsy's system can upload a picture faster than I can type this post.) So head on over to the shop to see all the items included in the Inventory and Destash Sale. Finished Project: A Piece of Cake Quilt

A finished quilt! I love how this one turned out and am proud at my first 'real' attempt at Free Motion Quilting. (More on that later.)

My quilting is not perfect by any means, but I am still very happy with it. This quilt came together amazingly fast, like one-and-a-half afternoons fast. I would have been completely done sooner, like three months ago sooner, if I hadn't decided to do the quilting myself. I did a lot of reading and practicing before I attempted to Free Motion Quilt on this pretty little quilt.

The back was pieced with leftover layer cake squares which was nice because I didn't need as much backing material. I cut the backing so one piece was 28" x the length and one was 14" x length. Then I just sewed about 6 layer cake squares together then sewed those to the backing pieces. Easy peasy.

I also attempted bias binding on a quilt for the first time. Since I was using stripe fabric for the binding, I wanted the stripes to be horizontal. Yikes. Usually cutting on the bias doesn't throw me but this time it did. Maybe it was the fact that I was cutting it out at 9:30 at night the day after a nasty nasty stomach bug. Ya. That was probably it. Also, the only difference from the pattern was the fact that I didn't add the borders.

So there you go! A quick and easy quilt. I wish I would have attempted a quilt like this for my first quilt, it would have made me fall in love with quilting much, much sooner.

Am I the only one...

who has about 40 pages of treat/dessert/cheesecake(yum)/cookie recipes compared to only about 15 pages of main dishes in her cookbook? No? Oh good. Thanks for making me feel better. I only know this random fact right now because I am updating my family's recipe book. (I have a binder with all our family favorites in one place. I love it.) This project has been one of my 'non-sewing' projects as of late. Clearly I love treat/dessert/cheesecake(yum)/cookie recipes more than the sensible main dish recipes. Mmm...dinner tonight...Eclair Cake with a side of Chocolate Chip Cookies sounds just about right. Oh, if you want to be really tempted go check out my recipe board on Pinterest...but don't say I didn't warn you. It is almost a visual representation of my treat/dessert/cheesecake(yum)/cookie recipes to sensible dishes ratio.

Also, please tell me I'm not the only one who ~~eats~~ wants to eat dessert for dinner ... but only sometimes....

Finished Project: America Banner Using the Cricut

I know I've been saying this frequently, but I'm working on lots of different projects. All are in different stages of completedneess. Some involve sewing, some are Photoshop projects or other various home projects. I fully intend on sharing most as they get done, but in the meantime, please excuse my very infrequent blogging. (Actually, I don't think I've ever considered myself a 'frequent' blogger.) I will try and share more of how I did the projects instead of 'here is this great thing I made!' A little more exciting don't cha think? I sure do.

So here we go, not a tutorial by any means, but a little explanation of how I made this cute little 'America' banner using the Cricut. (I also made a Birthday banner using the same method and posted pictures here.)

I love making these banners because they are relatively quick. Cutting out the pieces on the Cricut takes the biggest chunk of time. However, just load and set to cut then you can go and finish more important things, like cleaning the bathroom. :) I used the Mini Monograms cartridge, the first and only cartridge I will ever get in addition to the ones that came with my Cricut. (It is a great one to get. I found mine for about $24.00 with no shipping on eBay.) I cut the scalloped circles at 5" and the inner circles at 4.25". If you use 12x12 scrapbook paper you can fit four scalloped circles or four regular circles on each page. I used the Smiley Monster font for the letters and cut using the Sure Cuts A lot program I purchased for my computer. (Sadly, you can no longer buy Sure Cuts A lot for the Cricut.) All the letters fit nicely on one 12x12 piece of scrapbook paper. If you have a Silhouette, you can do the exact same thing as I am sure they have similar shapes. Then it is just a process of layering and gluing the circles and letters together and stringing with tulle. I also threw in some left over star garland from another project instead of buying ribbon. If you are hosting a Fourth of July event, this is easy enough to throw together for a quick decoration.

Strawberry Jam and Fourth of July

So how did it get to be the almost end of June already? Wow.

The last week or so I've been up to my elbows in strawberry jam and other strawberry goodies. I ran out of my 2 cup plastic jars I typically use and decided to get a smaller size to give as gifts to friends/family. So I went to get those cute little size plastic Tuperwares, you know that you use for salad dressings in lunches, and Walmart had their version. Six for $1.67ish...you know the typical Walmart price...end it with a seven or a nine. I came home filled up the jars and I couldn't get over how cute they looked. Blue lids, yummy red jam...wait a minute. What a cute little Fourth of July present for neighbors/friends. The little size holds just about 1/2 cup of jam. So I just ripped up some festive fabric I had on hand and made some cute little tags. Talk about quick, easy, and inexpensive.

Where I've Been

Been learning how to....

{free motion quilt} It is kinda scary at first, like merging for the first-time on the freeway when you are learning to drive scary. But once you get the hang of it is not bad at all. :) Practiced ALOT before I started to free motion quilt and now have a stiff neck. However, I am more than half way done with the pictured quilt.

2007 (maybe earlier?) called and wanted to know why I didn't have any vinyl lettering in my house. So I cut some out on my Cricut and organized my kitchen.

Yes, I know the Shilouette is the rage right now, but I love my Cricut. (Apparently I need a trip to Sam's. I was going to wait and share pictures of this project till they were all nice and full...but though 'eh what the heck!' Clearly you can already see what is/suppose to be in all of them anyways.)

I finally found a frame that wasn't too expensive for this...

Thank you Ikea for selling reasonably priced larger frames.

Of course, made from Bliss. Two charm packs and about 5 yards left in my Bliss stash. Ruby can't come out soon enough.

Will be making freezer jam from all of these....

Happy Birthday Banner Using the Cricut

The other day I made a 'Happy Birthday' banner for my sister as her birthday gift. I love how it turned out! I used the Cricut to make the banner which of course made this easy as pie. I used two different cartridges to get the fonts, which I think made it look unique. Since it was so long, it was kind of hard to get a full length picture of the banner. (If only I had a nice camera with a wide angle lens...sigh.)

So there you go another finished project! I have some left over of the printed cardstock so I think I am going to make one that says 'celebrate' for us. I already have a bunting birthday banner that I made for our family.

To Market to Market...I did not go...

Ever since I knew Quilt Market was going to be in SLC, about 2 years ago, it was my plan to attend. But through a long series of events it was not meant to be this year. Sniff sniff. However, I will go one day! So needless to say, I have been anticipating reading my favorite bloggers' posts on Market. Of course I may have a box of Kleenex in my lap while I read said posts and devour the rest of the Homemade Reese's Peanut Butter Cups I made this weekend.

In other news. Here is one of the few projects I've accomplished as of late...

Drapes! My first 'keeper' (meaning: for more than a few months - home decor projects aren't my greatest sewing strength) of a true home decor project. I love love love how they turned out. The panels are fully lined with blackout lining. The drapes are great at keeping out the bright Arizona sun. Another first for me was that I used a blind-hem foot/stitch. Very easy. It was hard to get a good full length picture, but the drapes are floor length. The thing I really loved about this project...I made both panels in ONE afternoon. Nice.

So there you go! Like I said, one of the few completed projects around here. I am just horrible at remembering to take pictures of the other ones. I hope everyone is doing great!

Easter Dress

So here is the finished dress! I love how it turned out.

Working without a pattern has its challenges, like the skirt part didn't end up as full as I wanted it. I should have doubled the measurement of the entire bodice - both front and back - but sigh, I only doubled the front piece. Which of course gave me the measurement of the entire bodice. Opps. I had a total Tim Gunn from Project Runway 'make it work' moment. I had to laugh at myself for that mistake. But I made it work. The real success of this project was that I had it finished three days before Easter. Go me. (That was not the case last year.) My other two Easter to-do projects...um...did not happen. So is life. :)

I hope to share some more finished projects in the next couple of days. I've been making some fun little girl skirts, I made one in less than two hours. Nice. I also have a Moda Bakeshop recipe in the works. So lots is going on over here in sewing land, finally, but also lots of life is going on too.

Tried and True Recipe: Better Than Take Out Orange Chicken

It has been a looong time since I've shared a recipe. Recently, I've been in a try-new-recipes mood and I have to say that I've come across some good ones. When I saw Better Than Take Out Orange Chicken I knew I had to make it because it looked just that good. And it was.

Wow!!! If it wasn't for the fact that it was fried and took a little more time than I like for a weekday meal, I'd seriously make it once a week. (Yep, I do think it is better than Panda's. Of course this recipe has a has a taste of its own but it is wonderful.) FYI: If you make this, make sure you use ginger root and orange zest, they totally make this recipe. Don't use the dry stuff. Also, I didn't use chicken thighs, I just chopped up 2 large chicken breasts. It made a lot and I have plenty for leftovers. Bonus.

So there you go. This would be fun to make for a stay-in date-night, special occasion, or just because it looks that good.

Here is to trying new recipes! I love it!

insert clever title here....because I can't think of one

I finally made a decision for my daughter's Easter Dress! Yay! I have one week and a day. To be fair though, I've had everything ready 1 1/2 weeks but it is still sitting unfinished in my sewing room. Lets just call it life.

The 'pattern', or kinda at least. Of course, me being me, couldn't find the 'right' pattern. A while back though, I hearted this dress on Etsy because I just loved it. It is very similar to other dresses I've made in the past, so I figure I will just go sans pattern. Wish me luck!

The fabric. Not my usual choice in style or colors but for some reason I was just drawn to it. It was nice to pick something out of my fabric 'comfort zone'. The pink will be for the main part of the dress and the yellow will be for the sleeves, sash, and strip at the bottom.

In non-sewing news, I started on a project I've been wanting to do for a long time. Last fall I saw this cute post over at the Crafting Chicks. (one of my favorite craft blogs) I loved the ABC poster and had been wanting to make/find something similar. I finally bought the Alphabet Soup set by Zoe Pearn over at the Sweet Shoppe. I've been having lots of fun in Photoshop getting the images placed just right. I am still working on spacing before I print it off as a 16x20. I think this project in total will cost around $15.00 for the printing, graphics, and frame. Not too shabby. (FYI: There is a boy set available. In the Crafting Chicks post, she shows the boy set as an alphabet poster.) Sorry for all the links! I just wanted to make sure I gave proper credit.

FYI, Easter is coming up. Thank goodness it is late this year....that is working in my favor. I am looking for a cute dress pattern to make the annual Easter Dress. So currently I am on the hunt for a cute 2T or larger pattern. Of course it doesn't have to be an exclusive 'Easter' dress pattern, any cute little girl's dress will do. I already have some patterns that I've used and LOVED that were very simple. (i.e. - Sweet Baby Dress by leila & ben and Lulu Dress by KustomKids) However, I am wanting to try something new. Any suggestions?

Also on the 'wish to accomplish by Easter' list are:

and of course a couple of bunnies from Sock and Glove

Blushing Big Time

The other day, I received a little surprise and note in the mail from Lissa over at Moda. It was a copy of a new publication by BH&G called Perfect for Precuts. (Random tid bit...For some reason I had Harry Potter on the brain and thought 'Perfect for Prefects'... again... random.)

I though 'Oh that was nice that Lissa sent me a copy!' After flipping through and getting excited about some of the projects, I flipped over to the back of the magazine. And what did my eyes behold?!! My name and quilt immortalized in print. (I have never been in a magazine before!) I about died!

Personal Note: Thanks Lissa for capitalizing my A, you don't know how many times people have 'corrected' my name because they thought I made a typo or thought LeAnne should be spelled another way. (Which of course it can...but you know what I mean.) Let's not even mention that every year in HS I had my name engraved on my year book and each year it was spelled differently. Since of course, I know how to spell my own name, I wrote 'LeAnne' on the form and I would get spellings like Leann, Leeann, Le ann, or Lee anne. (Each year it was different.) Yep...so I mentioned the whole saga of my name...sorry for the tangent. :)

Sunkissed Aprons

Has It Really Been Three Weeks?

Yikes! That was an unplanned blog break. But my, was it refreshing. I wish I was reporting back with oodles of projects, a couple new tutorials, patterns, or something to that affect. Sorry, my friends...no dice. Even more unplanned was the fact that I only touched my machine once in the last three weeks. Ya. Life definitely has been in the trump position, so all I can say is I've been caught up in life as we all know it to be.

But I do have a few fun things to share that I need some input on:

1. I've inherited something that I've been longing to have.

I have loved this little accessory of my mom's since I was a kid. It was always in our kitchen and it held all those common household items; rubberbands, twisty-ties, paper clips...you get the idea. I am ready to breathe some new life into it. I am thinking a a good sanding and a new paint color, but not sure which color. Any suggestions? At first I was thinking new knobs, but now I am loving the current ones.

2. Another inheritance from my mom.

This beautiful handmade infant dress. I of course want to keep this; and the three other I inherited. However, I don't want to stick them in a drawer or trunk. The only thought that has come to me is to display them in a shadow box. (Keeping the shadow box out of direct sunlight of course.) Any other suggestions?

So there. A very lackluster post for being MIA from the blogosphere for the past three week. Have I missed anything? I fully intend on being more productive in my shop and blog in the coming weeks. Lots of ideas popped into my head over the last three weeks...we shall see which ones actually come to be.

Just Checking In...

I finished up my next project for the Moda Bakeshop and here is a tasty little preview for you all...

Surprise, surprise....lots of ruffles! Now I just have to schedule my cute 'models' so I can get some great final pictures. After that, the 'recipe' should be on the blog in March sometime.

My quilt from the last post is now a quilt top! (I actually got the quilt top assembled that same day! Yay for me!) It is just waiting to be machine quilted, which I will be attempting myself. I will let you know how that one goes. :)

Oh and it is official. I have caught a bug...the quilting but that is. I started this quilt mid-last week and I am loving it. (My stash of Bliss is slowly dwindling away...sniff sniff.)

Happy Valentine's Day

I should have a cute red and pink heart infested post for you today. However, I don't. I love decorating and getting ready for Valentine's as much as the next girl but this year I got a little sidetracked.

Part of the sidetrackedness (word?) can be attributed to this fabric. (Dream On totally reminds me of all the vintage sheets people are getting their hands on.)

On Saturday I decided to start a project that I've been wanting to do for awhile; a new quilt. Anyone who knows me and quilts know that I am a slow quilter. I adore quilting, but it always takes me forever. (The only exception to this was the Just Growing Quilt I did for MBS.) So when I started this quilt on Saturday my expectations were pretty standard, maybe come August I'd be finished. Well as we ~~speak~~ type I am assembling the quilt top. Yep. Over the course of a lazy Saturday afternoon (and during naptime I may add) I was able to cut, piece, and assemble all the rows for this quilt. I am still in shock. So instead of my sewing space being scattered with fabric waiting to be sewn into blocks, my ironing board is stacked with lovely quilt block rows ready to be pressed and sewn into a quilt top.

What a beautiful sight.

Incase you are wondering I am using the Piece of Cake pattern by Thimble Blossoms. It is truly a piece of cake.

Inspiration ... Just a Couple of Years Late

The other night I came up with a great idea for a new quilt. Then today I started looking at fabric options. I couldn't find what I was envisioning, so of course I did the natural thing that I KNEW would leave me in frustration. I started looking at OOP (out of print) fabric lines. I knew I shouldn't have, but I did. If you are ever in a similar situation just save yourself the frustration because OF COURSE you will (and I did) find exactly what you want.

Now if Arcadia was a year old I might still have a little luck in finding some precuts and/or yardage. But this beautiful line dates back to 2008/2009. Even more annoying is/was the popularity of this line. (That is not the annoying fact. I adore popular fabric lines.) What makes Arcadia's popularity annoying is the fact that it makes Arcadia that much harder to find.

So if there are any Moda fabric gods out there, could you please reveal to me the location of some sweet Arcadia yardage? Oh and to not have it cost an arm in a leg would be great too.

Have any of you just need to sew or {insert favorite hobby here} to relax? Yesterday was that day for me. It helped that yesterday was chilly and kinda cloudy...the perfect day for staying in and having some one on one time with the machine. Plus, I finally cut into my stash of Sunkissed by Sweetwater. It has been sitting on my sewing table since November.

It is so purty...

I love the name of this fabric line; Sunkissed. The perfect name for a fabric line that comes out in the middle of January. Makes you long for the warmth of spring. (BTW - I hope everyone on the east is surviving the massive blizzard....) Did I finish the project I started? No, of course not. ;) But don't worry...it will be done soon and when I am done I think you all will love it.

While we are talking about this lovely fabric line can I just say how much I adore the quilt pattern Sweetwater just released for this fabric?

Makes me want another stash of Sunkissed just to make it. Mmmm...may have to splurge next month.

So here is to sewing...whatever the project, whatever the day...I love it.

I was attempting to achieve a white-out background and failing miserably. I honestly remember thinking, 'I can't imagine what I am doing wrong?' Little did I know, I was doing EVERYTHING wrong. Clearly, I was clueless at photo basics. I hadn't learned that outdoor lighting was best. On top of that, I took most of my pictures inside, at night...wait for it...with a flash.

Oh. How I have learned.

In comparison, I've redeemed myself with photos like these, not perfection by any means, but much better:

Now you ask, how have I made the transition from this:

to this?

The answer to your first question is, 'No'. I do not have a fancy smancy camera. One day I hope to own one, but that day is no where in the foreseeable future. All I have is a simple point and shoot camera. However, I've learned how to make that point and shoot camera feel like it is fancy smancy camera. (Note: I am not a pro. There ~~might be~~ are far better ways to photograph handmade items. Nevertheless, these are the things that work for me.)

1. Meet my background. A simple foam art board purchased from Hobby Lobby. I think it cost me a grand total of 3 bucks. I shoot all of my pictures on this. If you want to improve the quality of your pictures a great white background is a must. (I usually take my pictures closer up, but if I was going to use this picture, it is a little too dark, I'd just crop out my cute lil' toe and my patio. No one would ever know...)

{Sometimes I use a piece of fabric or pretty printed paper on top of my background if an item needs some contrast.}

2. I shoot all my pictures outside. If I can't shoot outside, I place my background in front of a VERY sunny window. Don't shoot at night with a flash....spare us. But don't worry we've all been there and made that same mistake. :)

3. I learned that sunny skies aren't the best for photography. Yep. You heard me right, cloudy days or slightly overcast days are the best. If you are like me in live in a climate that is sunny 95% of the time, head for some shade.

4. I take a lot of pictures. I usually take about 3 - 4 pictures in each angle. Then I eliminate.

5. I got comfortable with a photo editing program. You don't need to sell an arm and leg to purchase Photoshop. (However, I do use Photoshop and I love it.) There are many other fabulous and AFFORDABLE or FREE options such as:
Photoshop Elements - runs you about $70 - $80
Picnik - homemade by Jill uses this quite often and has some great tips
iPhoto - for my fellow Mac users

Even still, sometimes I want a perfect 'white out' background, not all the time, but sometimes. Even shooting outside you still get shadows. And again, because it is always sunny here, I always shoot in the shade. Sometimes the shade is too dark or whatnot. So then my photo needs that extra 'kick' to make it have white-out background.

A perfect white-out background is almost impossible without a professional photo studio and/or ninja photo editing skills. Both which I lack. However, the other day I made a discovery called FotoFuze. It is a free online site that helps achieve a perfect white-out background. It is geared to Etsy sellers, but you do not have to be one to use the site. All you do is upload your photo, highlight the area of focus (your item and surrounding shadows) and it 'fuzes' your photo to have a white-out background. (There is a tutorial that automatically loads after you sign up.)

I know you can do this in Photoshop, but I haven't taken the time to learn. Plus I know many people out there do not have Photoshop but want the look of a white-out background. So if you sell handmade items and are looking for a solution great! I hope this helps. Or if you just love to show off your handmade items online, use this to give your photos that professional touch. An important note. To get the results above you MUST use a solid white or black background. Preferably you want it to be flat as possible. So think art board/poster board instead of a sheet. It helps to cut down on unnecessary shadows.

So there you go! Some photography tips for you all. I love being able to show my work off in its best light. Again, I am not a pro...but when my photos have gone from this:

Tutorial: Felt Valentines & Envelopes

I had a fun time making this little project. This idea has been floating in my head for about a year or ever since I made these last year. After making them I realized, 'Wait! I need to make actual envelopes!' I've had these sweet little envelopes done for about a week but due to a crazy schedule since making them, I am just now posting the tutorial. So here is a fun Valentine tutorial, better late than never, and before the holiday!

Valentines ready to be stuffed and delivered!

Tuck in the flaps to keep those Valentines safe!

Note: You could make 'regular' envelopes to have for pretend play all year. Just make the envelopes out of gray or blue felt.

Materials:
1/3 yard of red, pink, and magenta felt {you could also use felt sheets, but it is cheaper by the yard}
1/4 yard of white felt
disappearing ink pen
thread
hot glue or tacky glue
print template out on cardstock and cut out (click here for template PDF)

Finished Size: 6.25" x 5.5"

1. For each envelope cut:
(1) 6.5" x 9.25" piece of felt {front and flap of the envelope}
(1) 6.5" x 5.5" piece of felt {back of the envelope

2. On the larger piece, measure up 5.5" and mark with disappearing ink pen across the entire envelope.

3. Take template and place on the mark you made as shown below. Trace around the template. This will mark the flap of the envelope.

4. On the smaller piece, place the same template along the top edge of the felt. Trace around the template.

5. Your two pieces will look like this:

6. Take the larger piece and line up the right diagonal mark with the edge of your presser foot. Sew all the way around the flap until you get to the top mark going straight across the envelope.

7. Now line up your needle with the mark going across the envelope. Sew until you get to where you started sewing. Backstitch. Place aside.

8. On the smaller piece, measure down about 1" on each side. Make a rounded edge like shown in the picture below. Sew, lining up your needle with the mark and following the rounded marks you just made.

9. Trim along your sewing lines with pinking shears. On the front piece of the envelope I trimmed about 1/8" - 1/4" away from my sewing line. On the back piece, I trimmed about 1/2" - 3/4" away from my sewing line. Make sure you trim further way from the sewing line on the back piece so you can tuck in the flap.

11. Cut a little square out of white felt. (I used pinking shears and mine was about 1 1/2" square.) Sew the square in place in the upper right hand corner. (About 1/2" away from the edge.) Hot glue or tacky glue on a little heart. Or if you have a little helper, have them use tacky glue to glue the heart in place.

12. To make 'writing' on the front of the envelope I just used a wide zig-zag stitch. Or you could embroider names. To make the stitching stand out I sewed then I backstitched all the way back to the beginning. Then I sewed normally again. When you are taking the envelope off your machine don't pull it off quickly. This will cause the thread to gather and bunch up. Just gently pull your envelope out from under the presser foot just enough to put a finger on top of where you stopped stitching. Then pull the envelope off the rest of the way with your finger holding the threads in place.

13 With the front of the envelope right side down, place the back of the envelope on top. Pin in place as shown. Sew the two pieces together using 3/8" seam allowance. Start sewing at the top mark going across the envelope and continue sewing to the other side. Backstitch at the beginning and end.

14. Trim the rest of the envelope with pinking shears!

15. To make Valentines cut several 4.5" x 5.5" rectangles from white felt. Cut out hearts from scraps of fabric or felt to make Valentines. I hot glued on most of my felt hearts. I also did some fun decorative stitching on the felt before adding the hearts. This is fun to do with kiddos. Have them help you cut out hearts from fabric and felt. Also, have them use tacky glue instead of hot glue. (You also could write notes on paper and place in the envelopes.)

Fun, festive, and relatively fast! Have fun making these fun Valentines!

Sewing Space: Show me the Buttons!

Do any of you have oodles of buttons? Or am I the only one? I love buttons. When I first started sewing Joann's had a bunch of buttons on clearance for 20 cents a tin. I kinda went crazy and bought a bunch. Of course I didn't have a plan in mind, but you never know when you'll need a button...right?

A few months back someone gave me a craft caddy. Back then I didn't embroider like I do now, so I decided to use it for buttons instead of floss. (However, this week I went and bought a caddy for my embroidery floss because the stuffing in a jar thing isn't working anymore. I knew that was a quick solution and not a long-term thing...)

So if you will...my pretty little caddy of buttons...

I love having my buttons organized like this. When I open up the caddy, I just love looking at the colors together. What great inspiration! The large aqua ones are among one of my favorites.

Then the aqua and red polka dot buttons are a brand new aquisition. I have been eyeing these on Etsy for months and finally gave in and bought them. Again, no specific purpose in mind...

They came from England, and it was worth the extra wait for them to go through customs. (FYI: International shipping into the US is taking longer than usual.)

Such a nice way to organize those buttons...

When I am all done, I just place the caddy towards the back of my sewing table...out of the reach of little hands. :) I currently don't have any shelving for my sewing stuff so my sewing table is currently home to most things like this. The empty caddy on the bottom is for my floss. I just have to wind all the floss on the bobbins...movie night anyone?

So there you go! Any other tips for organizing out there?

{celebrate!}

I have a few things to celebrate today:

1. I hit the big 500 mark in my shop! Wahoo. Who'd ever thought I would make 500 of anything that other people would like too? Thanks to EVERYONE for all of your support and encouragement. I couldn't have made 500 of anything with out the sweet comments, emails, and encouragement.

3. I am on the brink of finishing lots of projects. (see the photo above for a peek) I said last week that my machine has been going non-stop, and it has. But a few of my projects are in that 'limbo' stage of almost being done. Stay tune.

4. I have chocolate chip cookie dough in my freezer that keeps on calling my name. I keep on going and getting a little bit of frozen cookie dough goodness.

...hmm...maybe this isn't something I should be celebrating...

What do you do when you are having a craving for a certain color combo?

You find the right fabric and sew something. Which of course turns out to be wickedly cute....because it is aqua and red.

Yep. That should feed my addiction for aqua and red...at least for a little bit.

Like the tote? Sorry, I am keeping this one. What a meany I am! But don't worry, you can get one for yourself with whatever initial you desire. See I am not a meany after all. ;)

Valentine Chairback Pattern

Ready for a new pattern? (Well this one isn't technically new, it was around last year. However, I didn't get it listed until a week before Valentine's...oops.)

So here is a new updated version to you in plenty of time for Valentine's! The Valentine Chairback is fun to make and is fully lined with heavy-weight craft interfacing. This helps the bag keep a great shape and perfect to use year after year. There is also a little slot in the flap for easy delivery of all those Valentine goodies! The pattern is now for sale in my shop.

So there you go! Happy Sewing! Hope to be back later this week with lots of new items. My sewing machine has been going non-stop the last few days. I am excited to do some serious show and tell.

Welcome to 2011

Happy New Year! I know we are already four days into the New Year...but best wishes to you all! I hope the Christmas Season was a delight for all. {I know mine was...it went by way too fast!}

Usually, after Christmas is some what of a letdown for me. I take all my decorations down, my house feels extra bleak, and I have one long month ahead of me. However, this year, I am looking at January in a whole new light. I have a fresh new year ahead of me, and to me, that is very encouraging and rejuvenating. I've made some strong and realistic goals that I am determined not to abandon by the end of the month.

I also am excited for my plans for the shop/blog. I have a bunch of ideas floating in my head that just need to be put on paper and organized into action. Along with making personal goals this year, I made some for my shop/sewing life. One goal involves my fabric stash. My stash is...um...let me just say...is getting a little large. My goal is to use my stash and NOT to buy any new fabric UNLESS I absolutely need it to finish a project. (Of course, I am allowing myself to buy fabric to make certain items in my shop.) I know this will be challenging, but I am excited to see what fun things I can make with my stash. Does anyone want to join with me on this? I am thinking of doing a series of posts on the blog called 'Use that Stash!' ...seems catchy right? :)

So here is to a fresh New Year waiting to be made into the best one yet!

Sewing Space: Organizing Ribbons and Such

I have a wish.

My wish is that one day I will have a sewing room. In the past and currently, my sewing space has been the kitchen table or a corner in a room wherever we have space. When I look at sewing studios/rooms like these a girl can only dream.

Nevertheless, just because I don't have the above doesn't mean I can't love the little space I call my own and I do. However, the biggest challenge with having an involved hobby like sewing is storing all the 'stuff'.

For the longest time my ribbons and the like where kept on the original spools in a drawer. What a nightmare. Ribbon was always slipping off and becoming a tangled mess. A while back I saw this idea and knew it was the solution for me. (You can also see the same idea here.)

Now my ribbons and trim happily reside wrapped on clothespins inside this great glass jar.

A couple of things. I bought my clothespins or Doll Pins at Michael's. (Some mentioned they were able to find some Dollar Tree. I could never find any at mine.) Also, I purchased my glass jar at Walmart for right around $8.00. Ten bucks for ribbon organization bliss. Priceless.

The other day I was going through my mess of embroidery floss driving myself crazy. Take one look at my floss organization compared to my ribbon:

If you could choose to be the floss or the ribbon which one would you be? Ya...I'd be the ribbon too.

I knew I needed a quick solution. I recently saw this post over at homemade by jill and wished my floss was organized in such a way. But right now I don't have time to wind my floss. I was at Hobby Lobby the other day when I saw all their glassware 50% off. I had a vision of sorts. I made a purchase, came home, and dumped out my mess of floss.

Nice eh? Don't you love the paper in there too?

Next, I placed the floss in the jar with the colors I use most on the top. Is it the most organized in the most efficient way? No, but it works for now. Much better than the mangled zippie bag.

Now my floss can hold it's own next to my ribbon.

Yep. Looks much better.

Hey blog readers. In order to streamline my shop production a little, I need some quick input. The Elle tote has been a popular item in the last few weeks. (Thanks Leash for asking me to make it in the first place!) Usually I have all the pieces for this bag cut so when I get an order I just have to sew. Makes life a tad easier. However, I would love to have a stash of precut letters already to go. Naturally, I don't want every single letter of the alphabet.

So my favor? If you have a little girl could you please leave her initial in the comments? (I don't need full names.) I figure I can get a sampling of the most common initials and have a stash of those on hand. This is not meant to exclude those little girls whose name doesn't begin with a common letter. This is just to help me stay sane. :)

Tutorial: Simple Table Runners

Can you believe Christmas is two weeks from tomorrow? I don't say that to stress you out, but simply because I can't believe it is already THAT close. Today I am bringing you a quick and simple tutorial...

Here is a quick little tutorial for some Simple & Quick Table Runners. There are a couple of things I love about these runners:

This is a total 'naptime' project or can be done in no time at all.
Involves NO pinning! Yay!
Requires little fabric so you can use that last 1/2 of a yard that you just have laying around.
Brings to life the saying "a fast project is a fun project"
Make a couple and it makes a great gift!

Sold? Great. Here we go.

Materials
1/2 yard each of two different cotton fabrics, prewashed and pressed
(The fabrics don't necessarily have to coordinate since you will only see one side at a time.)
matching thread
Yep. Two materials sweet. Oh and a screaming hot iron is a must for this project.

Notes
WOF = Width of Fabric
RST = Right Sides Together

1. Cut your fabrics to your desired width x WOF. I cut mine to 15" wide. You can make it any width you want.

2. Place your fabrics RST matching the selvedges and edges. (The selvedges may only line up on one end. The other end may be short depending on the widths of your fabrics.) Press the two fabrics with a hot iron. By doing this the fabrics temporarily 'stick' together and therefore no pinning!

3. With fabrics still RST, head back over to your cutting mat and cut off the fabrics to the desired length. I have little hands at my house so I didn't want my runner dangling over the edge for little hands to pull off. I cut my length to 37". (Since your fabrics are RST together, now your fabrics will be perfectly lined up.)

4. Now sew both fabrics together using a 1/2" seam allowance. I stared on one of the long sides, continued all the way around and left an opening. Your opening doesn't have to be huge, just enough to fit your little hand.

5. Head back over to the iron. Press along all seams, this helps make the seams nice and crisp. Clip the corners.

6. Lets talk about that opening right quick. Press the opening back as shown in the second picture. Flip the runner over and do the same to the other side as shown in the third picture.

7. Turn the runner right side out and poke the corners. A poking device such as a bone folder is great.

8. The opening should already be nicely pressed inside! When you topstitch the opening will be invisible. Now press around the rest of the runner at the seams. Press so that you can't see any fabric from the other side. Flip over the runner and make sure you can't see the other fabric from that side either.

9. Now start sewing close to one of the ends using about a 1/4" seam allowance. Sew all the way around the runner. Give it a final good press and be amazed!

10. Tie it up with a ribbon and a gift tag. Done and done.

Simple Christmas Gifts & Projects

Catch the key word in that title? Simple. The more people I talk to the more I find people having a desire to make Christmas simple so they can focus on the true meaning of the season. Over the last couple of days I've seen some great simple gifts and projects that I wanted to share with you all. Then hopefully later today or tomorrow I will have a great tutorial posted for you all. And you guessed it. It is SIMPLE.

So here we go.

#1 Felt Initial Ornaments from made

There isn't anything Dana does that I don't love. I wish I had her clothing skills. Seriously. I digress.. I love these ornaments and am planning on making a set for my family and some people on my list. Perfect to do while relaxing with the family and watching a Christmas movie. My favorite thing about this project...hand-sewing. I know. Crazy...but I love hand-sewing. (Plus I have all the materials on hand to make a cute little set. Yay!)

#2 Girly Print from Lilly and Thistle

When I saw this print I fell immediately in love with it. (Plus it is free!!!) I love the simplicity of the print and adore the quote. The wonderful thing about this print is that it can be used as a gift for any occasion. Baby shower, birthday, baptism.... the list could go on. Now only if I could find cute cupcake liners she used for the skirt. :)

#3 Quick Fabric/Felt Flowers from Tater Tots and Jello

Fabric Flowers. Enough said. Cute, quick, and a glue gun. My kind of quick project. A set of three of these flowers would make a perfect teen gift!

#4 Candy Cane Kiss Cookies from Our Best Bites

For the bakers in the room, you've got to try these beauties. WOWZERS! They are delish and a tad rich. So make sure you've got milk handy. Bake these babies up toss them in a cute container. Done.

#5 Reindeer Noses from Crafting Chicks

I love these ladies. They have amazing ideas. The first idea on this list is the most simple of the ones they mentioned. (Reindeer Noses) Maybe I love this idea because I LOVE Peanut M&Ms. This could be even more simple by just sticking the tag on a whole bag of Peanut M&Ms. Or maybe because that is the way I'd love to receive this. ;)

#6 Car Cozy from Homemade by Jill

I had to stick a boy idea on here! I made a couple of these last year and they were a hit...and very simple to make. If you've made a crayon roll before it is the same concept, the pockets are just wider! (Note: I didn't add numbers on my cozy.)

So there you go! Some simple hand-made gifts. Now if you are going to attempt all of these, that might defeat the purpose of being 'simple' but I am just sayin'...

Thrifting

I am always astonished at the amazing things people find thrifting. My attempts at thrifting usually result in no purchases and just staring at piles of tossed away knickknacks that I only can see as dust collectors and clutter on my shelves. I know thrifiting involves vision and a degree of patience.

I have always been a tad impatient so maybe that is my problem.

Since my attempts have been in vain, I have been looking around Etsy for inspiration. I am doing this in the hopes that when I see a pile of what seems to be nothing but junk, I will just dive in with the hope of finding something truly amazing. I realize that all of these items have been painted/cleaned after the fact and did not look like this when they were found.

So without further adieu let me indulge you in some amazing finds.

I am kicking myself that I just didn't snag these amazing sconces. I bet she is an amazing thrifter and got both sconces for a lot less. (But I should have told myself $22 is nothing for these beauties.)

Classic Felt Christmas Stockings

I love Christmas Stockings. Growing up they were always my 'favorite' Christmas decoration.

I wanted to do a more simplistic stocking design this year, so I did a spin off the popular Elle tote in my shop.

Like I said, simple. But very classic and a little bit modern. {Just my style!}

I love the two widths of ric rac. I love ric rac. {In case you hadn't noticed.} I wish I could have a wall full of every color of ric rac.

Just one last detail at the heel. Love sticking polka dots in when I get the chance.

Personally, I haven't gotten into the whole subway art craze, but I am loving this. (But you are talking to a girl who doesn't have a lick of vinyl lettering in her home. So...go figure. This is not in retaliation of disliking it, I simply like it in limited quantities.) Oh, eighteen25 also has a quick tutorial for the darling g litter trees.

So what is the 'almost free' mean for this project? Simply that. To print this size at Sam's/Costco is about $6.00. Then depending if you have an empty frame laying around you can spray or can find for a couple of bucks at Goodwill/DI...this is a seriously affordable project.

Hmmm. After looking at the whole shelf, I think I just want the whole thing in my home. Loving it.

Christmas Advent Pattern

Happy Tuesday everyone! Shortly after I finished the Merry Christmas Advent Cards, I also finished the Christmas Advent Calendar Pattern. It has actually been up in the shop since late Friday, but I haven't had time to blog about it until today.

The pattern includes directions and templates to make all advents I made for the shop this year.

Style 1

Love this one! The background fabric is Holiday Damask by Michael Miller. It is getting harder to find because it was part of their Christmas collection from last year. The red polka dot is from Hobby Lobby. (This red polka is on the 'wall' of fabrics at Hobby Lobby instead of out on the floor. If you shop at Hobby Lobby you know what I mean.) :)

Style 2

The background fabric is the same red polka from Hobby Lobby as shown above. The Santa fabric is a few years old and I have not seen it anywhere. I do have about a yard of it left, so if anyone wants some to make a calendar, let me know!

Little note: I do not include directions on extending the background fabric (red polka) over to the back. I did this a couple of times and it caused too many issues. However, you can still do the bigger title with the fabric only being on the front of the calendar. (As shown in the other two styles.)

Style 3

I also had this calendar for sale in the shop, but it sold out before I could even blog about it! :( I love this one, it is fun and funky. The advent cards also make it look great.

I got the big polka dot and red polka dot fabric at Hobby Lobby from their Christmas fabrics. The green snowflake fabric came from JoAnn's from last year. However, I have seen it at a couple of different Joann's this season.

Well there you have it! I hope that if you are looking for an advent pattern, this is the one for you!

Oh, I should add that I am offering the Christmas Advent Cards and the Christmas Advent Pattern together as a bundle pack just as I did with the Give Thanks Countdown Calendar.

Merry Christmas Advent Cards

This project has been about a year in the making. Last year when I came out with the 'Give Thanks' Countdown Cards, I got oodles of emails asking when I would come up with a Christmas set of countdown cards. I had every intention on doing it last year, but I could never get my ideas such that I was happy with the outcome.

Well, a year later, I am happy to say that I finished the cards and I love the outcome. They are focused on the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus Christ. Some of the activities are more 'fun and family' focused, but most are focused around Jesus Christ. There are over 30 activities. I know families are busy during the Christmas season, so many are ones that can be completed around the dinner table or in a few minutes. Ones that are more time-involved are some of the traditions you may already be doing.

The highlight of the cards to me are the 12 Symbols {Days} of Christmas. Beginning on December 13th, and ending on Christmas Eve, one Christmas symbol will be taught and discussed. (Yes, they are simple descriptions for all ages.) Each symbol also includes a scripture reference from the King James version of the Bible. I know many families have the tradition of doing the 12 Days of Christmas anonymously for a neighbor or friend. So I decided to also include printables and directions for doing the 12 Symbols of Christmas for a friend or neighbor.

I also have the pattern for my Christmas Advent Calendar coming. Hopefully I will get it listed later today! Just a few more pictures and one last edit. I also will be selling a bundle back of the Advent Pattern and Advent Cards, just like I did for the 'Give Thanks' Countdown Calendar.

I love the cards and I hope you do to. I've decided to do an impromptu giveaway for two sets of the cards. (They will be emailed to you and you print them off as 4x6 photos.) Tutorial: Just Growing Quilt

Remember that lovely looking quilt from a few posts back? Well, I am finally getting around to sharing some pictures of the whole quilt.

I absolutely adore this quilt. There is just something about a cozy new quilt that I just love. This is probably my favorite project that I've ever done. Seriously. Call me crazy but my favorite part of quilting is hand sewing the binding. I know...crazy. But there is something I just love about sitting there and hand-sewing on binding.

What is the pattern you ask? Well, it is your lucky day because you can get the full tutorial over at the Moda Bake Shop! I hope you all enjoy the tutorial and please email me if you make it. I think it is a great beginning quilt and it can really be done rather quickly so it makes a great gift. I had the quilt professionally quilted and I love the results.

Oh and Ruby loves hanging out with the quilt, they look so good together.

Ohhh goodie. I love looking at these pictures. They just make me happy.

The Christmas 'to make' list - Decorations

How many of you have a growing project list for Christmas? {raises hand}

I found two Christmas decoration projects that are are at the top of my list to make this year. To be honest, my list is much longer, but I this short list is much more realistic in what I can accomplish.

1. Christmas Lanterns. Aren't these beautiful? I think it would look lovely on a table or in an entry way. You wouldn't even have to light the candles. However, I have an issue with the directions. They don't tell you where they purchased the LANTERN! I love the lantern they used and would love to get one. (I wouldn't mind getting a lantern in a smaller size though, watch the video and you will see it is rather large.)

2. Patchwork Pillows. I love when my Ballard Designs catalog arrives in the mail. I saw these great pillows the other day but about dropped dead when I saw the price... $75.00! But wait for it. That is cost per pillow! (Of course, this is Ballard Designs, but still.) I could make dozens of my own pillows for that price. I will definitely attempt to make a knock-off version.

That is truly my 'short' list of Christmas projects. Even still, with it being only the beginning of November, my list is sure to grow. Anyone else find any Christmas decorations to DIY?

Tutorial: Gathering and Ruffling the QUICK Way!

We all know gathering and making ruffles are a basic sewing skill. However, sometimes making them can be a tad time consuming. We also all know that you see ruffles everywhere right now. So with that being said, I am sharing my 'little secret' to quick gathering and making ruffles. (It probably isn't that much of a secret, but it sounds much more intriguing when I put it that way.)

I am a proud owner of a ruffler foot for my sewing machine. I love it, it is handy, and is perfect when I am doing loads of ruffling. However. My one miff with the ruffler foot is that it's not at all conducive for a 'quick' project. Meaning, I wish I could have a dedicated sewing machine for just my ruffler so I didn't have to take it on and off, adjust the settings, etc. All of you who have a ruffler are nodding in agreement.

So. When I need to gather or make a ruffle in a flash this is what I do. Oh..and say bye bye to double rows of long stitching and pulling thread.

1. Set your stitch length to the longest length on your machine. (Same as regular gathering.)

2. Increase the tension. This is where it becomes a little 'dependent on your machine'. You may want to play for a few quick minutes to play around with the tension to see the outcome.

This is how it works on my machine:
increase my tension to + 1 = a light gather

increase my tension to + 2 = a good ruffle, the fabric comes out to be just about half it's original length
increase my tension to + 2.5 = a fuller ruffle, the fabric comes out to be a little less than half it's original length
increase my tension to + 3 = very full ruffle

You can see the gather/ruffle getting tighter and fuller as I increased the tension.

I should also add that this way of ruffling is VERY forgiving. You can always pull the strings to make the ruffle fuller. You also can push the ruffle around to redistribute the placement or to reduce the fullness. (Just make sure you leave nice long thread tails on both ends!)

3. Once you've increased the tension and set the stitch length the longest it will go, the fun begins! First, pull your machine threads so you have a nice long tail.

4. Start ruffling your fabric using 1/4" seam allowance. (If I need to fold under the edges of my fabric later, I start ruffling about 1/2" in from the short edge.) IMPORTANT: Hold on to those long thread tails for the first few stitches so they don't get pulled into the bobbin causing a royal mess! (I always hold the thread tails when I begin sewing anyways but it is especially helpful in this situation.)

Start sewing and watch as the gathers appear!!! WOW!!! (Do not backstitch.)

5. Stop gathering about 1/2" from the edge of the fabric again. Do not backstitch. Remove the fabric from the machine and again leave a long tail of thread.

6. Depending on your project you may want to secure the ruffles at this point. Do that by setting your machine for regular sewing. Then just sew on top of the stitching line for the ruffles. Or you can simply tie off the long thread tails at either end of your gather or ruffles. Once you do this, you will not be able to adjust the ruffles.

Result: Quick and easy ruffles! Ta-da!

The end. Like the pictured project? Don't worry, it is coming. :)

It's Beginning to Look Alot Like Christmas

I am happy to release a new pattern! Need new stockings this Christmas? I've got you've covered.

The reindeer stocking is up and in the shop. The stocking is quite easy to make and is a wonderful beginning level sewing project. I made a set for my family last year and we absolutely love them. I adore the cuffs on these stockings, very festive. I plan on having more stocking patterns available in the coming weeks including: Santa, Elf, and Snowman...maybe a few more. We shall see.

Oh, even though this post is all Christmas... Happy Halloween! Have fun wearing costumes and eating candy!

Meet Ruby

Yes, Ruby is a doll, a very darling doll don't you think? Ruby is made with Bliss fabric by Bonnie and Camille from Moda and the Ruby Lou Pattern by Sew Much Ado. I absolutely loved making her. This was my first time sewing a doll/softie and I found the construction and directions very straight forward. This definitely will be a repeat project. I know a few little girls on my Christmas list who will be getting a Ruby of their own this Christmas. :) What I loved about this project is that it's the perfect scrap fabric project. I had some bits of fabric left over from making the quilt in the picture and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. (~~Full pictures of the quilt are coming.~~ See full quilt and tutorial here.)

This is a personal review of this pattern, I paid for my own pattern and am blogging about it because I loved it!

A Handmade Christmas

I know...it isn't even Halloween yet. However, I am a firm believer that as soon as the calendar turns November 1st, Christmas is here in about a second it seems.

Give Thanks Countdown Cards

Thanksgiving is truly one of my favorite holidays. Who doesn't love getting together with family and friends to count our many blessings. (Plus the food isn't too shabby either.)

This year I updated the 'Give Thanks' Countdown Cards that I made to go along with my 'Give Thanks' Countdown Calendar. I've been teaching myself Photoshop this year and had fun one day designing four different card styles. Then I added all the activities on the cards. I also made blank cards so people could add family member's names or even create their own activities. (The card file includes activities, directions, and the jpeg images that you print off as 4"x6" photos.)

This year's version is very versatile, you don't have to have the calendar to use the cards. You can use the cards on their own;

or you can make your own calendar and place the cards in the calendar pockets.

Either way, the cards are a great tradition to use year after year as a family.

The card files are up in the shop. You can also purchase the Countdown Calendar pattern AND the Countdown Cards together at a discount.

Boo Blocks

We all have seen our share of 'Boo' blocks or the like around blogland lately, right? Well I whipped up my version over the weekend and I have to say I love them.

To make my blocks I used digital papers from Summer Drigg's FREE digikits Dreamsicle and Vintage Oreos. With the power of Photoshop I added some text and a nice gray outer glow. Then it was simply a process of printing the images off as 4x6's @ .13 cents a pop, a little trimming and Modge Poding those babies to some scrap wood blocks I painted black. Talk about instant craftification....wow...did I just pen a new catch phrase? ;) Plus I had all the materials on hand which meant this project cost me a grand total of .39 cents....the dollar store can't beat that.

Anyways. It was a fun festive craft that I am sure to repeat for other holidays.

Tutorial: Halloween Matching Game & Winners!!!!

A couple years back I found some adorable Christmas fabric on clearance at a quilting shop and it was so cute that I couldn't pass it up. Of course I didn't know what I could use it for at the time but I bought it anyway. Fast forward to last Christmas and from that fabric I made this cute little matching game. I made a set for my family and a couple of sets for the shop and to give as gifts.

Then a couple of weeks ago I was at Joann's and I found a similar fabric that was Halloween themed. I snagged it and made a little Halloween matching game last night. This is really a quick project and can actually be a no-sew project if you need it to be.

Materials:
fabric that has a 'blocked' repeating print to it
fusible webbing choose either:
Heat n' Bond Lite - if you want to sew (purple package) OR
Heat n' Bond Ultrahold - if you want a NO sew project (red package)
felt
iron & pressing cloth

Note: When you buy the fabric get enough so the print repeats itself so you have enough to have matching pairs.

1. Adhere the fusible webbing to the wrong side of your fabric. Cut out 'blocked' images using scissors or rotary cutter and ruler.

2. Cut enough squares or rectangles from felt for the entire set of matching cards. I cut mine about 1/2" larger than the size of the fabric images.

3. Remove paper backing from the fabric images and center on the felt squares or rectangles. Fuse in place following package directions. NOTE: Set your iron to WOOL when you adhere fusible webbing to felt or you will MELT your felt. Also place a pressing cloth between your project and the iron.

4. If you used the Heat n' Bond Ultrahold, you do not need to sew to reinforce. So you are done! I used Heat n' Bond Lite, so I just stitched around the inside edge of each fabric image.

5. Optional: Make a quick drawstring bag for storage!

There you go! Easy peasy! Makes a quick project and a great gift. Don't want to make one? I have one set up in the shop looking for a home.

So now go, whip one up and play a fun festive matching game as a family!

Sewing on a Budget: Patterns - Which One(s) to Buy?

Do you ever have this issue: You see several patterns of things you want to make but can't make up your mind of which one to get?
or
You see some patterns you love but you don't love the price?

Well, first let me say this. Most of the patterns I buy are of the tutorial/made by a designer type rather than a Simplicity or Butterrick type. Yes, Simplicity and the like have value, both cost and instructionally. However, I find them very difficult to understand and read, especially from the new sewer perspective. I don't get the someone-is-standing-next-to-you feel that I get with designer/tutorial patterns. From the few patterns I have bought I've learned MANY great skills. When I first started to sew, I picked out patterns based on a clothing skill I wanted to learn. Granted, with the internet you can almost learn any sewing skill for free, but sometimes I needed the extra guidance of how that skill yielded a result in clothing. With all that said, I don't own a great many patterns. They can be expensive so I select my patterns carefully and only buy ones I know I am going to use.

Right now I have an obsession with little girl's jackets/coats. I wish I could just make one of the fly, sans pattern, but I don't quite trust myself yet. There are certain elements I want to learn in coat/jacket construction so I am looking for those elements as I search. (I really wish I could make this jacket that Dana from Made designed. It is darling. I hope that with learning some coat/jacket basics, I can!) I don't live somewhere that gets that very cold. However, we do get some lovely 'jacket weather' so luckily I can look at jackets/coats based on the cuteness factor instead of is-this-going-to-keep-my-little-one-warm-enough-so-she-doesn't-get-sick factor. I have to say that there are many cute jacket/coat patterns that are both very cute and very practical.

simple library totes

I was cleaning out some computer files when I stumbled across these pictures I took a few months back. The totes were for a customer who wanted library totes for her four children. I loved how the set of totes turned out and all the colors worked so nicely together. The 'girly' prints have a scalloped medallion for the initial. The 'boy' print has a circle medallion.

Halloween Aprons

I've been getting a little itchy to 'try something new'. I love my little 'niche', but it was getting time to try some new things. So I while I was browsing the internet for some new fabric, my eyes kept drifting over to my large stash of fabric. I quickly exed the idea for new fabric and matched up these yummy fabrics to make a fun little Halloween apron.

I think it would be an adorable part of a witch costume. Don't you?

All fabrics came from my stash, oh it felt nice to use it up!

Polka dots, ric rac, gathers, and ruffles. What a marvelous combo.

Do you think it would look as cute in an adult size?

Oh and don't you worry Christmas ones are on the way too! The above pictured apron is up and listed in my shop.

Star Struck

How many of you have seen a famous person? I have only seen a handful and depending on who, I think it is pretty cool or just 'meh'.

Well the other day I saw a famous person, at least in the sewing/amazing fabric world, and thought it was beyond cool. I was at Hobby Lobby buying binder rings and I glanced over to the next register and who do I see...Heather Bailey! Yep. (See even Heather Bailey shops at Hobby Lobby.)

I am beyond certain she saw me do a double take. Then I began to feel super self-conscious. Why? Because I was running around with the Marlo Bloom handbag that I made, which is her design. (However, I didn't use her fabric, the fabric below is Morning Glory from Amy Butler.)

I hope it made her smile, because I know I would if I saw someone running around town with one of my Owl Totes. Although one of my friends told me she saw someone at a show with one of my owl totes...that made me really smile....but I digress. I wish I could have thought of something clever to say. 'Hi' would have been a good place to start. But sigh, I was beyond star struck.

So. Needless to say that little event made my very ordinary life seem a little more special that day.

Oh FYI, the Marlo Bloom pattern is beyond awesome and makes a great gift. Just a warning when you make it and use it, be prepared to be stopped ALL the time asking where you bought it. Then you get to say 'I made it' and most people won't believe you. ;)

Tutorial: Quick Drawstring Bag

Here is a great sewing 'basic'. The drawstring bag. I remember the first time I made one...I dunno why, it is not like it was a momentous occasion. The first time I made one was for a laundry sack to take to my church Girls' Camp. I recently came across it and I laughed so hard. It is like 1 1/2 yards long and 18 inches wide. I remember thinking it was so cool. Thanks mom for not bursting my creative bubble at age 12. ;)

With that being said...on to the tutorial.

{quick drawstring bag}

1/2 yard of fabric, this makes a great basic size
1 1/2 yards ribbon or cording
large saftey pin

I used a serger to finish my raw edges. If you don't have a serger, directions are given in parentheses.

1. Cut two 13" x 15" rectangles. (You can easily increase this size if you need it bigger, just add an additional 2" for seam allowances and whatnot.) (No serger: On the top edge of each piece, fold under 1/4" and press. Fold under 1/4" again and press.) Fold under 1 1/2" from the same top edge. Press to crease.

2. Unfold the creased edge and place the pieces right sides together. (No serger: Also unfold the 1/4" you folded under twice.) From the pressed/creased edge measure down 1/4" and pin. Measure 1/2" from the first pin and pin again. This marks the opening for the drawstring. Begin sewing at the top, stopping at the first pin and back-stitching. Remove bag from your machine and trim threads. Begin sewing again at the second pin, back-stitching. Continue sewing to the bottom of the bag. Stop sewing at this point.

3. Press open the seam you just sewed. Try not to iron out the crease you made. My finger is pointing to the opening you should have.

4. Flip the bag over to the front. On the right side, sew on either side of the opening to hold the opening open. Place the wrong sides together again, pin, and sew the rest of the bag together. Leave the top open. Press seams. (No serger: Finish raw edges with a zig-zag stitch.)

5. Flatten the bottom of the bag. Make the side seam come come to a point as shown. Measure 1" from the point and mark. Sew on the line you marked.

6. Trim about 1/4" from the seam you just sewed. Repeat for the other side of the bag.

7. With the bag turned right-side out, fold the creased edge down. Turn the bag right-side out and sew the creased edge in place about 1" away from the top edge. (No serger:With the bag turned right-side out, fold the creased edge down. Turn the 1/4" folded edges back under. Do not turn bag. Sew on top of the 1/4" folded edges about 1/8" away from the edge.)

8. Pin a ribbon or cording onto a safety pin and thread through the opening. Seal the raw ends of the ribbon or cording. Fill with whatever items you need!

Shopping at Hobby Lobby

I love Hobby Lobby. Nuf said.

The sales aren't as great as Joann's but I still go there for specific items because I can get them cheaper than Joann's. They also have a weekly coupon on their website www.hobbylobby.com.

Kona Cotton

Kona Cotton - I love Kona Cotton. It's regular price at Joann's & Hobby Lobby is $5.99. At Hobby Lobby it is ALWAYS on sale for 30% off. Typically, I get it at Hobby Lobby. Yes, I could use my coupon at Joann's but I am closer to a Hobby Lobby. I figure I'd eat the extra 10% in savings by driving/extra time spent. I use Kona for clothing and quilting. Plus it comes in EVERY color!!!
broad cloth - A huge step down from Kona Cottons, but still does a great job. At Hobby Lobby, it is usually about $1.87 a yard. But with a hot 40% off coupon in your hand...nice! I use broad cloth for linings, especially in totes. I use a load of broadcloth so I usually buy 10 yards at a time with a coupon.
ribbon - Most of the time it is on sale for 50% off. You can get usually around 15 feet/5 yards for .99 cents. Great deal! And they have a great ribbon selection
cotton prints - Often are much cuter than Joann's and always 30% off!
tulle on a spool - (wow that rhymes) Often this is on sale for $1.99 for a 25 yard spool of 6" wide tulle. (Great color selection.) This is great for the no-sew tutus and for decorations.
clearance section - I love to dig through the clearance in the fabric section. I've found many fun trims, fabrics, and notions for a steal.

My list of 'regular' items at Hobby Lobby is much shorter than Joann's but still worth my time. I also love the fact that they are closed on Sunday. Everyone needs a day off.

Loving What I'm Doing...

Like I said earlier, August is birthday month here at Everyday Celebrations. This month is two years since I thought, 'Hmmm...I hope someone buys my stuff' as I posted my first items on Etsy.

The shop has grown and the blog has gained many a readers over the last few months. I love my little hobby that has turned into something a little more and can honestly say, 'I am loving what I'm doing.'
